Air Infiltration

Building of all shapes and sizes are subjected to wind loads. Depending on the geographic location of these buildings, design wind loads can vary significantly. Load imposed by winds can result in air leakage around the buildings various fenestration products. 

Air leakage is determined by monitoring a high precision “Manometer”  while maintaining the test specimen at a constant air pressure differential. With
positive or negative mass air flow, our technicians are capable of determining the overall performance of the Fenestration product.

  Monitoring a buildings infrastructure of energy usage details a story of when, what & how efficient your structure really is. Also what improvements can be done. By taking scientific measurements we can understand HVAC air flow, static pressures, temperatures then make adjustments.Our data loggers are used to record temperatures and humidity for long periods of time. We utilize pressure manometers to analyze positive and negative pressures for offices or the whole building envelope. This is done in conjunction with exhaust fans on and HVAC on. At the same time we will test with make up air fans on and off. 

Building continuous commissioning and testing. In our assessments we test duct air flow, static pressures, duct leakage, back drafting of flue gases. Roof top package HVAC systems are generally un-efficient or in need of maintenance. Walk-in refrigeration systems we find temperatures general set to low causing compressors to run non stop. Door seals causing leakage, clogged evaporator / condenser coils, no thermal barriers in ceilings, etc.

Data logging is done by us installing our sensors that reports and stores necessary information. We continue storing this data from day one. Continuous commissioning is something our competitors do not do.

Why is this important?

Over time mechanical equipment will become less efficient. We compare the stored data annually to existing data. Example: A new compressor that usually ran 12 hours per day to maintain zero degrees in a walk-in is now running 16 hours per day a year later. Four additional hours per day times 365 days per year. 1460 hours annually times ten amps at 240 volts. This is 2.4 KWHs times 1460 hours equals 3504 KWHs. At fifteen cents per KWH equals an additional $ 525.60 per year. This is for just one small compressor in your business. This is not including other compressors, HVAC or lighting.  

So why is this compressor using more energy after just one year? Many reasons. Bad seal on door, leakage in refrigeration, loose electrical connection's, failing thermostat, failing expansion valve, dirty evaporator or condenser coils.

The point is, without proper monitoring on high wattage equipment your energy usage keeps rising every month and perhaps you blame it on your electrical company.
